Australia Day Turtle Nest Sitters

WHAT WE ARE DOING

This will be a very busy day on the beach. The role of the Turtle Nest Sitters is passive protection of each nest site. The simple act of physically occupying each nest site with towels and shade etc for the day will protect it from being parked-on by unknowing 4WD users. Nest sitters will have nest and turtle information on hand to provide to any interested beach users who may be interested, but this is not designed as an active outreach/educational program.

WHO WE NEED

If you are fit to walk the required distances, self-sufficient and ready for a long day on the beach in summer, then we need you!

We have the four nest sites furthest up the beach covered by one volunteer at each nest already, so we need volunteers for:

• Site 1 (30 minute walk up the beach from the car park)
• Site 2 (45 minute walk up the beach from the carpark)
• plus a second back-up volunteer for each location is desirable

Nest Sitters will be committing to the whole day whatever the weather, starting at 6am and be required to walk up the beach to the nest location, carrying all they need for the day:

• Food and snacks
• Plenty of Water
• Sunscreen
• Sunsafe clothing – hat, long sleeves etc
• Swimsuit/bathers so you can have a splash to cool off/ Towel
• Their own packable lightweight pop-up shade
• BIEPA Stickers (small supply provided to give away)
• BIEPA Postcard with contact numbers (small supply provided to give away)
• Turtle info sheets (supplied)
• Small Turtle sign to place next to the nest (supplied)
