BIEPA's Wonders of the Wallum
Join us for guided wildflower walks in the wonderful wallum, Bribie's precious coastal heathland ecosystem, as part of the Sunshine Coast Wildflower Festival.
When and where
27 Aug 2022, 8:30 am – 9:30 am
Community Arts Centre, 191 Sunderland Dr, Banksia Beach QLD 4507, Australia
About the event
Once the low plains and sandy seaside hills and dunes of South East Queensland were alive with the noise of frogs, insects and chattering birds, and were covered with wallum: a mosaic of low shrubbery, woodlands, and heath.
Now, relatively small remnants of wallum heath remain in mainland South East Queensland. Fortunately, some areas are preserved in National Parks and Conservation Parks, but the wallum heaths are battling to survive intact. Recreation, development, waste dumps, weeds, and drainage water from surrounding suburbia threaten the fragile plant species, and dogs, cats and toads harass the ground-dwelling native wildlife.
Bribie Island is fortunate to have some wonderful pockets of wallum and you are invited to join BIEPA’s Wonders of the Wallum walks as part of the Sunshine Coast Spring Wildflower Festival. The festival program has information on many other events in the area.
Please dress for a bushwalk (long sleeves, comfy shoes, hat) and bring sunscreen, refreshments, camera, and binoculars for the birds.
