Award Winning Environmentalists

On Saturday 10th October, Peter Alexander and I were proud recipients of Landcare Awards presented by Queensland Water and Land Carers (QWaLC) for our environmental work over the years, including most recently on the Buckleys Hole Rehabilitation project.

These annual Landcare Awards highlight, validate, and celebrate the efforts of volunteer participation in environmental conservation and restoration.

  • Angela Armitage (that's me) was the winner in the Women in Landcare Award. I will now represent Queensland in the Australia-wide Women in Landcare Award.

  • Peter Alexander was runner up for the Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award.

A bit of history

Landcare evolved in the 1980's as a grassroots movement to tackle the degradation of public land, such as national and conservation parks and also council parks and verges, waterways and farmland. It was an initiative of Joan Kirner, (former Victorian Minister for Conservation, Forests and Lands) and Heather Mitchell, (former President of the Victorian Farmers Federation).

Landcare Australia was established as a national program in 1989 under the government of Bob Hawke, who said:

"The damage being done to our environment is a problem for us all — not just government, but for us all individually and together."

Landcare Australia operates as a national promotional and support body for local environmental groups such as BIEPA.

Landcare has evolved into one of the largest volunteer movements in Australia advocating a balance between sustainable land management and environmental conservation. Encouraging effective partnerships and community participation is at the essence of Landcare.

BIEPA and Landcare Queensland

This is the first time BIEPA has been acknowledged by Landcare Australia through a Landcare Queensland award, of which there are nine categories. There was an impressive list of nominees for all the awards, so BIEPA's success demonstrates how collectively, we are achieving worthwhile environmental outcomes.

I will now represent Queensland in the Australia-wide Women in Landcare Award.

"Women have long driven grassroots conservation, yet their efforts have historically gone under-acknowledged. The Women in Landcare category brings visibility to their pivotal work and the often unrecognised contribution women make to environmental stewardship across Australia." — Landcare Australia

Long-time BIEPA friend Wanda sent me this lovely message of support:

"I was thrilled to see that you were recently awarded the Women in Landcare Award. You have much to be proud off. Koala Action Inc. is honoured to have you as a member and supporter of the work we do. Once again, congratulations." — Vanda Grabowski, Koala Action Inc.
