At a joyful afternoon celebration, BIEPA members Sherry and Jayda Bruce gathered important Elders and friends, young people (jarjums) and our State MP Ariana Doolan and CoMB Councillor Brooke Savige to acknowledge the success of a year’s engagement through a series of “Right Way Science” Workshops. Sherry and Jayda have led young members of PIEEC (Pumicestone Indigenous Education & Employment Council) through a process to support Project Potoroo, an initiative of their organisation Nature Nose with support from BIEPA.
The project involved Jarrah the conservation dog, cameras placed in the National Park, and bait stations to attract fauna. The jarjums helped make the baits, and learned how to identify signs of animals (involving poo!). Partners and participants were acknowledged and we watched a great video demonstrating the practical fun of the process.
Thousands of photos have been taken, revealing the secret night life of animals in the National Park. Ariana and Brooke gave impassioned speeches acknowledging the vital need to protect nature here on Bribie Island. It’s good to know these government representatives are committed to working with BIEPA to ensure we protect nature for future generations.
