If you fancy being a Citizen Scientist, you can help us with water quality monitoring!

Healthy air, water and soil ensures the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of all members of our community, contributing to the quality life of people who use our beaches and waterways and protecting all wildlife that live with us in our special and fragile environment.
Since 2017 the BIEPA Water Quality Monitors have participated in a citizen science project that tests our local waterways, collecting physical and chemical data to enter into a dedicated database. The information collected provides a baseline for comparing changing conditions in our waterways and enables BIEPA to alert authorities of any issues that may arise in our freshwater and marine environments – water turbidity, marine weeds, marine life kills, pollution and algal bloom.
Our team regularly monitors fifteen local catchment sites on Bribie Island and nearby Ningi, and estuarine sites in Pumicestone Passage. We also organise field days to become familiar with our local water catchments.
Last year we were fortunate to receive a Local Community Support Grant from the City of Moreton Bay supporting the costs of servicing and ongoing maintenance of our monitoring equipment and enabling us to continue monitoring the quality of our waterways,
You could become a BIEPA citizen scientist. Contact the BIEPA Environment Team if you would like to join our water monitoring program.
