What are we doing?

Exploring the hope of emu reintroduction on Bribie Island

Why are we doing it?

For many years, the community on Bribie Island / Yarun have dreamed of seeing emus once again roaming the wallum. After a long decline, local extinction became a reality in 2015 with the death of the last emu, Erica.

Her loss left a gap in Bribie Island’s ecology, natural and cultural heritage—and a question that has stayed with the community ever since: could emus ever come home?

That hope helped inspire A Conversation of Hope at the 2025 Bribie Island Nature Festival, exploring the possibilities of restoring native woodlands and returning emus to the island with a panel of experts. The conversation continued at the 2026 festival’s Bribie Island Sanctuary – Fact or Fiction? discussion, asking Australia's leading conservationists what it would take for Bribie to once again become a place where wildlife can thrive.

How are we doing it?

BIEPA is now initiating a preliminary scoping study to take the next step: drawing on the work of scientists, conservation managers and reintroduction experts, to assess whether emus could return safely and sustainably. We are bringing together Traditional Owners, respected organisations and university researchers– combining cultural knowledge, local experience and science to shape the investigation.

The study will also explore how Bribie Island might fit into a wider regional effort to restore coastal emus. Could Bribie become a complementary piece of the puzzle, helping rebuild a future for emus across the region? This is one of the possibilities the study will examine.

The work will consider habitat, food and water requirements, threats, animal welfare, effects on other wildlife, and the long-term resources and responsibilities involved. It will identify knowledge gaps, research needs and any habitat restoration required, guiding whether a more detailed feasibility assessment should follow.

By taking a collaborative first step, we hope to turn a longstanding community dream into an informed plan for the future.

How can you help?

Project Tasks

See if there are any specific tasks you can help with to make progress on this project. If every BIEPA member takes on just one task, we will have a huge impact on protecting nature on Bribie Island.
